About Lymphoma

Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer affecting white blood cells, also called lymphocytes, which function as a part of the body’s immune system. When infected with lymphoma, lymphocytes behave abnormally: they may divide faster than healthy cells, live longer than normal, or cause a variety of other problems.

While lymphoma chiefly affects the white blood cells themselves, it may develop in any part of the body that participates in the immune system or the creation or regulation of white blood cells. This means lymphoma can form in the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, the blood itself, or a number of other organs.

Lymphoma generally comes in two forms:

  • Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL): Hodgkin lymphoma is the less common of the two, encompassing six sub-types that affect the Reed-Sternberg cells (a giant cancerous cell that forms in people with this condition).
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL): This refers to any form of lymphoma that doesn’t affect Reed-Sternberg cells. There are over 61 subtypes of NHL.

Symptoms of Lymphoma

Because lymphoma usually affects the blood itself instead of a specific organ, it’s often more difficult to diagnose than other cancers because symptoms are more generalized. Commonly, people come to the doctor because they display cold or flu-like symptoms that don’t go away. Other symptoms of lymphoma include:

  • Chronically swollen lymph nodes which may or may not produce pain
  • Persistent fever
  • Sudden, unexplained weight loss
  • Chills
  • Sweating, usually at night
  • Generalized chronic fatigue
  • Generalized itching
