If you’ve been diagnosed with a brain cancer, there may be several different treatment options available to you based on your age and health, and the size, location and stage of your tumor. The board-certified medical and radiation oncologists at Palo Verde Cancer Specialists are highly trained and skilled in using a variety of advanced radiation therapies to treat all types of cancer. When radiation is determined as the best treatment option for brain cancer, the most precise radiation treatment available is the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System.
The CyberKnife System is a non-invasive treatment for cancerous and noncancerous tumors and conditions where radiation therapy is desired. It is a classified as a stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment where high doses of radiation are channeled to the exact location of your brain tumor. It is especially effective in treating brain tumors due to its precision in shaping the beams directly to the exact shape and size of your brain tumor, saving nearby healthy brain tissue and nerves which could impact everyday functions like speech. The CyberKnife combines its flexible, robotic arm with a high-tech imaging system that tracks even the smallest movement of your tumor. It is used alone or in conjunction with other treatment options such as surgery and chemotherapy.
Precision is the key to successfully using radiation to treat brain tumors. With so many everyday functions originating from the brain, such as talking and movement, you don’t want to risk damaging healthy tissue with radiation. The precision of CyberKnife treatment works to target your brain tumor and track even the slightest movement, avoiding the surrounding healthy tissue.
The robotic arm of the CyberKnife moves easily around your head allowing for beams of radiation to target your tumor from hundreds of different angles. The imaging system has a motion-tracking component that reacts and adjust to even the slightest movement – even from natural breathing – so that the radiation stays on point. CyberKnife’s submillimeter accuracy keeps the radiation from damaging healthy tissue, nerves and other organs and minimizes side effects caused by radiation therapy. CyberKnife is non-invasive therapy that is often used as an effective alternative to surgery for those who either are unable or do not wish to undergo surgery.
With other stereotactic radiation therapy like the Gamma Knife, your head must be bolted into a rigid metal frame. But with the CyberKnife, we fit you with a soft, flexible mesh mask to assist in keeping your head still. Treatment can be given in one to five days, one short treatment session per day in our comfortable Phoenix area office locations.
This treatment requires no surgery, anesthesia or hospital stay. CyberKnife is performed on an outpatient basis in one of our convenient Phoenix or Scottsdale area treatment offices. The CyberKnife services at Palo Verde Cancer Specialists include treatment planning, treatment sessions, and post-treatment follow-up appointments.
