What Is CyberKnife?

 

CyberKnife is a state-of-the-art radiation therapy system that can treat almost any form of cancer. CyberKnife is different because it combines cutting-edge technology from multiple fields of medicine, combining to produce one of the most advanced cancer treatment systems on the market today.

CyberKnife is completely noninvasive and works by using precision-targeted, high-dose radiation – the same type of energy found in visible light – to kill cancer cells and eliminate tumors. Using a rotating robotic arm, CyberKnife can deliver radiation with sub-millimeter accuracy, allowing it to use much higher doses than other radiation therapies and significantly shortening treatment times. Plus, because CyberKnife can track and account for tumor movement due to breathing and other bodily functions, patients never have to wear uncomfortable braces or immobility devices. This makes CyberKnife one of the most comfortable, convenient treatments available.

Not all breast cancer patients are eligible for CyberKnife, but for many patients, CyberKnife plays a key role in treatment. During your treatment appointments, you’ll simply lie on the treatment couch as CyberKnife’s robotic arm delivers pinpoint radiation directly to the tumor. Sessions last about an hour, and many patients can return to normal activities after a session.
