Healthy Snacks During Cancer Treatment

It is always important to lead a healthy life full of nutritious foods with activity to stay in good shape.  But, when you have cancer, it is even more important.  Cancer treatment can leave you depleted of energy, feeling ill and emotionally drained.  In spite of these feelings, it is important to nourish your body properly so that it can be strong enough to fight cancer.  During treatment, food may not sound appealing or taste very good, but still, you must try to eat, for your health.  One way patients can still get necessary nutrients while diminishing side effects such as nausea is to eat small snacks throughout the day.  But, to maximize these snacks, it is best to make healthy, nutritious choices.  Below we discuss the best nutritious snacks to keep you energized and nourished throughout the day so you can feel your best during treatment.

  • Vegetable Sticks
    • Vegetable sticks are nutritious and delicious on their own or with the dip of your liking.  They can be washed and pre-sliced when you are feeling well and you can keep them in small portions in your refrigerator for when you feel ready to eat.  Headed to an appointment, pack some carrot sticks in your bag to munch on if the mood strikes.
  • Muffins
    • Make your own muffins or purchase them at the store.  But, choose a whole grain options if available and get some that are filled with real fruit or vegetables if available as well.  If you are making them, try adding things like banana, shredded zucchini, shredded carrot or more.  They will be moist, delicious and easy to take with you on the go for a quick snack during treatment.
  • Fresh Fruit
    • Fruit is delicious, refreshing and often, easy to take on the go.  Throw an apple or a banana in your bag for when you are craving something sweet and filling.  Make a fruit salad with lots of different berries and keep it in your refrigerator.  When you feel ready to eat, you can spoon some into a bowl with some plain yogurt and granola for a yummy parfait that will feel like a treat but fulfill your nutrition needs.
  • Nuts
    • Whole, raw almonds or others kinds of unsweetened nuts make for a healthy snack that is protein packed and easy to bring with you on the go.
  • Smoothies or Popsicles
    • It is best to eliminate your caffeine intake when undergoing treatment for cancer but some may miss a flavorful beverage in the morning.  Skip the nutritionally-void coffee and pt for making a healthy smoothie that will take like you are eating dessert.  Don’t want it for breakfast, it is great any time of the day for a quick snack!  Throw in berries, bananas, kale, spinach, yogurt or whatever you have, blend it with ice and you will have a healthy and delicious drink.  If you are in the mood for a popsicle but want to reduce the processed sugar you are eating, you can make your own popsicles by blending fruit with water or yogurt and freezing it in popsicle molds.  This fun treat will be on hand in your freezer for any time you need it.
