What Is Lymphoma?

Lymphoma refers to cancer of the blood, and specifically, a cancer that affects white blood cells, also called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are a vital part of your body’s immune system, but when affected by lymphoma, they start to behave abnormally and subdivide at a rate much faster than your body can get rid of them. While lymphoma chiefly affects the white blood cells themselves, it may develop in any part of the immune system, including the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, the blood itself, or a number of other organs.

Types of Lymphoma

While there are many subtypes of lymphoma, this cancer is broadly divided into two main categories:

  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL): This refers to any form of lymphoma that doesn’t affect Reed-Sternberg cells. It’s the most common type of lymphoma, with more than 61 subtypes of NHL.
  • Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL): Hodgkin lymphoma is the less common of the two, encompassing six sub-types that affect the Reed-Sternberg cells (a giant cancerous cell that forms in people with this condition).

Symptoms of Lymphoma

Lymphoma can be particularly difficult to diagnose, as it often doesn’t concentrate in a single organ and instead affects the blood itself. Lymphoma symptoms tend to be fairly general and systemic, and patients often first see the doctor due to cold or flu-like symptoms that persist for too long. Other symptoms of lymphoma include:

  • Chronically swollen lymph nodes which may or may not produce pain
  • Persistent fever
  • Sudden, unexplained weight loss
  • Chills
  • Sweating, usually at night
  • Generalized chronic fatigue
  • Generalized itching
