Treatment Options for Kidney Cancer

There are a number of options we can use to treat kidney cancer, and your doctor will work with you to select the one that’s best for you. Your doctor may opt to use only one treatment, or they may combine a variety of treatment methods to provide the best chances at success.

Surgery

Surgery can be a highly effective method for treating kidney cancer, especially considering the fact that the body has two kidneys, but it can often function just fine with only one. This means that for severe cases of kidney cancer that have yet to metastasize (spread) to other parts of the body, a radical nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney) may prove an effective option. In this procedure, your surgeon takes out the affected kidney, the attached adrenal gland, and the surrounding fatty tissue. This technique ensures that the tumor has been removed in its entirety, virtually eliminating the possibility of recurrence, and most patients can live normally again with only their remaining kidney. Your surgeon may also choose a partial nephrectomy, in which only part of the kidney is removed.

Often, we can use laparoscopic surgery, which involves your surgeon controlling small robotic arms to perform the surgery through a number of tiny incisions instead of one large one. Laparoscopic surgery is a thoroughly modern technique, offering a minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery.

Chemotherapy

In some cases, chemotherapy may prove the best option for treating your cancer. This is especially true if the cancer is late-stage and has already metastasized to other parts of the body. Chemotherapy is an intense treatment that carries a host of side effects, but because it’s capable of targeting cancerous cells all over the body all at once, it can prove a preferable option in some cases.

Radiation Therapy

Thanks to advances in medical technology, we can now offer a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment option that comes with virtually no side effects. In radiation therapy, we use a state-of-the-art radiosurgery machine like CyberKnife to deliver high-dose radiation directly to the site of the tumor with exact precision, allowing us to eliminate cancerous cells without damaging surrounding tissues. Radiation therapy uses the same type of energy as visible light.

Radiation therapy is completely non-invasive, requiring no incisions, no anesthesia, and no toxic chemicals. Thanks to the sub-millimeter precision we can achieve with CyberKnife, we’re able to deliver powerful doses of radiation to the tumor while protecting surrounding cells. This means radiation therapy comes with few or no side effects and a minimal recovery period – in fact, many patients choose to return to work almost immediately after concluding treatment. In many cases, we can successfully treat kidney cancer with radiation therapy, providing you with a convenient, comfortable option for treatment.
